The Last Cookie: family recipes and the Italian-Canadian women who keep them alive.

DOCUMENTARY · PORTRAITURE· FOOD + CULTURE
The Last Cookie is a documentary photography project about Italian-Canadian women and the recipes they have carried through their families.
Photographed in their homes as they prepared the cookies they know by memory, the series brings together portraits, handwritten recipes, working hands, domestic spaces and the finished food. It began with the spirit of brutti ma buoni—“ugly but good”—and an interest in traditions whose value has little to do with polish or perfection.
These recipes live in stained notebooks, approximate measurements and gestures repeated over a lifetime. More than a record of baking, The Last Cookie documents the people, knowledge and family histories held inside them as they pass from one generation to the next.
